The two men in my life right now responsible for my inspiration and content in chilled, simple, small-numbered company.

Cigarettes become extensions of yourselves as the smoke acts as your release.

Like chimneys exhaling waste, you exhale your turmoil and hope the tangible smoke is a convincing visual that will make you believe you're at ease.

It's raining behind us, it's the background to our secluded conversations.

The afternoon is over and dusk is depriving me of enough light to admire your naturally alluring faces.

I love you both.

With no way of showing my appreciation for your presence to an extent that truly justifies.

What brought us here?

But a succession of successful movements in our individual lives.

Surely we should recognise these and know we're not complete failures.

You're talking of books from the bible now.

Both anti-religious but wise enough to know literary truths when you read them.

In fact, I heard you just say

Last night I had one of those bizarre heavy dreams

about a friend that passed away over a year ago.

I tried to write something about it just to savour it,

I doubt I did it justice but here it is anyhow...

The forest branches were leaning towards the house that day. Trying to get a glimpse through the window to see what was causing so much contagious tension inside. Six confused souls had their eyes locked on that seventeen-year-old boy that time had not touched. He was still wearing that olive green shirt and that trademark mischievous smirk. And just like always, he was oblivious.

I recall admiring him for his blissful ignorance to the evils of the world. Now he was oblivious to his own death that lingered in the room. Old wounds gushed open as we all became aware at just how much we missed his warming presence. Then the penetrating shots of guilt proceeded as we simultaneously realised that we hadn’t fought hard enough to prevent him from slipping from our conscious thoughts. We let the guilt well in our eyes then just listened to him talk. The soothing drone of his voice broke us all.

He sat cross-legged whilst we crowded around him. Like a symbol of innocence our thoughts reverted back to our adolescent gatherings, our ridiculous drinking games, our insignificant dramas. I laid down beside him, breathing deeply and staring at the ceiling in attempt to hold myself together. He looked down to where I lay, gazing directly into my eyes with confusion appearing on his face.

“Are you okay?”. Knowing that I would’ve choked on my words I responded with a forced smile. He reached to touch my hair and sent unbearable chills raging through my body. I was being comforted by a selfless soul, a lifeless ghost.

Small talk had never seemed so valuable. We threw questions back and forth and tried to keep our responses to his short, just to listen to his voice a little longer. Expectedly the moment reached a point where he decided he had to go. His facial expressions revealed that he didn’t know why he had to go, but that he simply must leave. A segment of time that seemed to be painfully drawn out now seemed to have ended so quickly. We watched as he let his intrinsic thought lead him out the door and follow the path from the back of the house. His olive green shirt was slowly being consumed by the surrounding greenery as the distance between the house and he grew. Our eyes were fixated as the earth ate him whole.

Tears uncontrollably flooded. The more I tried to fight them, the more they cascaded down my face. Those in arms length gripped each other. The awe of disbelief and rekindled sorrow was nothing short of suffocating. From the shoulder of a friends embrace I saw another through a window, sitting lonesome on an isolated bench. In a clumsy mess I stumbled through who was left in the room, out the door and started impulsively running. His elbows were leaning on his knees with his head focussed on the grass below. He knew I was running towards him but didn’t look up. I collapsed beside him on the bench seat. His arms wrapped around me and lifted me up as if I were a heap of dirty clothes.

“I don’t understand…” I muttered into his oversized mismatched jumper.

“He came to say goodbye. That’s all we need to know.”

Nerves.

Too much stress had taken its toll.

So I sat on the bonnet and just stared at one tree.

Imagining some striking energy that would come from touching it.

I forgot about the passing cars and moved towards the tree.

And there I was,

Laying my hand on it in some hope of feeling cleansed.

Despite feeling insane,

It felt like the afternoon had flipped its atmosphere.

It was like nature wanted to apologise,

I’ve never been so intrigued by someone’s mind.

And I don’t think I’ll ever find the perfect way to express my fascination.

Anyhow,

His name is Ryan.

He’s currently obsessive over a 365 photography project with a photo for everyday of the year.

Although it’s still early times,

It appears to be very promising.

Each photo is different with a fuckload of thought present.

Here are a few that grabbed me and decided not to let go.

Charlie Parr and his Blues Guitar

The Grand Junction is a deceptive kind of place.

Day light does it no justice,

But once night kicks in the atmosphere begins.

The dim lights create a glow that contrasts with the sterile clubs scattered around the town.

It has a warmth,

A dirty pub warmth where dancing naked on the bar is encouraged.

Charlie Parr came from Minnesota to share some blues tunes.

His worn in resonator guitar and bango accompanied his steady tapping boots that created a rhythm that everyone could feel.

One shoe tied, the other undone he sang old school blues and felt every word.

The room was packed with people in awe,

I sat on the floor right in front of him and suddenly felt like I was in pre-school.

We kicked off our shoes,

Drank beer and just listened.

The only thing that could top off the previously hot day was rain.

And so lightning and rain accompanied Charlie Parr.

We looked to the right of us where the door framed the night sky lit up by street lights where heavy rain fell.

“I’ve got a song about rain” he said.

And so he sang.

I hate the concept.

Its been dwelling my head for some time now.

I’m convinced as soon as I’m out of your sight everything becomes blurred.

The most hurtful things can suddenly be justified.

Significance diminishes and you just become oblivious.

I think it’s safe to say that any worrying regarding a partner is based on one’s own perception of their capabilities.

I think I can be sly and sneaky so I worry my partner will be.

But the thing is,

I found the will power to not be that.

I just don’t know how to make you find that same will power.

I need you to want to let go of those tendencies.

But how can I when its all got to do with control?

That little kick you get when you sway another.

It doesn’t matter how much interest is involved,

its just that little kick you get.

I know there’s a solution in their somewhere.

I’ll find it before we’re ruined,

Promise.

Excuse the swearing…

But fuck this is amazing.

It’s by an artist called Stefan Nadelman.

I’ve been distracting myself with such things,

and sometimes after a while

it becomes harder and harder to be impressed.

But I loved this.

Perfectly set to the song ‘I Say Fever’ by Ramona Falls.

The surrealist animation is dark and nightmarish.

It’s the connotations,

the enthralling sense of another world.

Where light is soft,

Faces are blurred

and everything looks surreal.

The simplest moments become art.

Framed in white and labeled with imagination.

Hopeful of being drawn into this other world.

And realise my eyes are welling up.

My lyrics always mean a lot to me.

But usually as a release,

He turns all the negativity of news and its desensitizing affects into a beautiful artwork.

It’s nice to know there’s people out there attempting to restore feeling into things that have come to make us numb.

I’ve been finding myself in regular moral dilemmas with myself. Not the usual daily decisions but a constant battle to maintain self-respect, to uphold my dignity and be confident in what I find right and wrong.

I’ve been facing myself with past mistakes, with the intrinsic hope that maybe I’ve learnt my lessons and can confidently take myself down the right paths.

But the battle remains.

My morals are blurred. And the fight to distinguish them almost appears too hard. But I don’t think I’m selfish enough to take what I have for granted or to be controlled by the guilt from self-indulgent situations.

Perspective is crucial. Don’t forget it.

Make your choice,
